Verizon Fios Router Yellow Light – Meaning, Causes & Fix
A yellow or amber light on a Verizon Fios router is a clear signal that something has gone wrong with the internet connection. On both the Fios G3100 (current generation) and the older G1100, yellow on the front LED indicates the router is powered on but cannot connect to Verizon's fiber network or obtain a valid internet connection. Unlike some ISP equipment where amber means 'partially working,' a yellow Fios router light means internet is down — no browsing, no streaming, no smart home. This guide explains what the yellow light means on each Fios router model, the most common causes, and a complete set of fixes from the simplest to the most thorough.
What it means
Verizon Fios router is powered on but cannot establish a connection to Verizon's fiber network. No internet service is active.
Severity
HighCan you fix it yourself?
Yes — power cycling the ONT and router resolves most yellow light cases.
Call a technician when
Contact Verizon Fios support if the yellow light persists after power cycling both the ONT and router.
What Does Yellow Light Mean?
Verizon Fios delivers internet service over a fiber-optic network. Unlike cable internet (which uses a coaxial cable modem), Fios uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) — a white box usually mounted on the outside wall or inside a utility room — that converts the fiber-optic signal to an Ethernet or coaxial connection that feeds your Fios router.
This means the Fios connection has two critical hardware nodes before it reaches your devices: the ONT and the router. A yellow light on the Fios router can originate at either point.
Fios G3100 and G1100 LED color reference:
Solid white — Normal operation, internet connected Blinking white — Router is booting or processing a connection Solid yellow/amber — No internet connection. Router is powered on but cannot reach Verizon's network Blinking yellow — Firmware update in progress. Do not interrupt Solid red — Hardware fault or critical error Blinking red — WPS pairing failed or security issue
A solid yellow light most commonly means the ONT has lost its fiber signal or the Ethernet connection between the ONT and the router has been interrupted. Because Fios is a fiber network, physical damage to the fiber cable (even a sharp bend) at any point from the street to the ONT can cause a complete signal loss that appears as a yellow router light.
What Causes This Error?
- Verizon Fios service outage in your area
- ONT (Optical Network Terminal) lost fiber signal — fiber cable damaged or disconnected
- Ethernet cable between ONT and Fios router loose, damaged, or connected to wrong port
- ONT needs a power cycle — has entered a fault state silently
- Fios router firmware update in progress (blinking yellow is normal in this case)
- Router lost its provisioning data after a power interruption
- Account issue requiring re-provisioning
- Physical damage to the fiber cable outside the home
- ONT battery backup unit (BBU) failed, affecting ONT operation in some configurations
How to Fix Yellow Light
- 1
Check for a Verizon Fios outage first. Open the My Fios app on your phone (using mobile data) or visit verizon.com/support/outage-troubleshooter/. If an outage is reported in your area, the yellow light will resolve when Verizon restores service. No local action is needed.
- 2
Power cycle the Fios router. Unplug the router's power adapter from the wall. Wait 60 seconds. Plug it back in and wait up to 3 minutes for the full boot sequence. The LED should progress from yellow/blinking to solid white if the connection is re-established. Many yellow light events are caused by a temporary loss of WAN IP that clears with a router restart.
- 3
Power cycle the ONT (Optical Network Terminal). Locate the white ONT box — it is usually mounted on an outside wall, in a utility closet, or in the basement. Unplug its power cable from the wall. Wait 60 seconds. Plug it back in and wait 2 minutes for the ONT to re-register on Verizon's fiber network. Then power cycle the router again. This two-stage restart resolves yellow lights caused by ONT registration failures.
- 4
Check the Ethernet cable between the ONT and the Fios router. The ONT connects to the router via a standard Ethernet cable (not coax — Fios uses Ethernet between ONT and router in most installations). Ensure the cable is firmly plugged into the ONT's Ethernet port (often labeled 'LAN' or 'Router') and into the Fios router's WAN/Internet port. Try replacing the cable if you have a spare.
- 5
Check the ONT's status lights. The ONT itself has LED indicators. On most Verizon ONT models: a solid green 'Network' or 'PON' LED means the fiber signal is present. A blinking or unlit PON LED means the ONT cannot see the fiber signal — this indicates a fiber line issue between the ONT and the street, which only Verizon can repair. If the PON LED is dark, call Verizon to report a fiber signal loss.
- 6
Inspect the fiber cable going into the ONT. The thin fiber-optic cable entering the ONT is extremely sensitive to sharp bends. A radius tighter than about 30mm will break the fiber signal. Check that the cable entry point is not kinked, that no heavy objects are resting on the cable, and that it has not been accidentally damaged. Do not attempt to repair a fiber cable yourself — contact Verizon for a technician visit.
- 7
Call Verizon Fios support at 1-800-VERIZON or use the My Fios app to run a remote diagnostic and request a technician visit. Verizon can remotely check the fiber signal levels at your ONT and trigger a remote re-provisioning. If the fiber signal is absent or too weak, a field technician will inspect the cable from the street tap to your ONT.
When to Call a Professional
A yellow Fios router light that cannot be resolved by power cycling both the ONT and router, with a confirmed normal ONT PON signal, indicates a provisioning or WAN configuration issue that Verizon must resolve remotely. If the ONT's PON LED is off or blinking, the fiber line itself has a fault — this is always a Verizon infrastructure issue. Call Verizon Fios support and report both the router's yellow LED and the ONT's PON LED status. Verizon does not charge for service calls when the fault is on their network.
Can You Still Use the Device?
While the Fios router shows a yellow light, no internet service is available. Wi-Fi is still broadcast from the router (devices will connect but show 'no internet'), and local network communication between devices continues. Fios TV service delivered over a separate coaxial connection may continue to function depending on your setup, as it does not always depend on the router's WAN connection.
