Canon Printer Support Code 5100 – Meaning, Causes & Fixes
Canon support code 5100 indicates that the printhead carriage — the mechanism that carries the ink cartridges and moves left and right during printing — is jammed, blocked, or cannot travel to its home position. Canon displays this code on PIXMA MG, MX, iP, TR, and TS series printers when the carriage motor senses unexpected resistance or the carriage fails to reach the expected end-of-travel position within the allotted time. It is one of the more common Canon error codes and, in the majority of cases, is caused by a paper obstruction, a misaligned cartridge, or debris in the carriage path. Most instances are resolved without tools in a few minutes.
What it means
The printhead carriage is jammed or cannot move to its home position. The printer has halted to prevent mechanical damage to the carriage drive system.
Severity
ModerateCan you fix it yourself?
Yes — clearing a paper obstruction or reseating the ink cartridges resolves most 5100 errors.
Call a technician when
If the carriage moves freely, cartridges are correct, and 5100 persists — the carriage motor or encoder strip has failed.
What Does 5100 Mean?
Canon inkjet printers drive the printhead carriage via a small DC motor connected to a rubber belt. The carriage slides along a precision-polished steel shaft and its position is tracked in real time using an encoder strip — a thin transparent plastic strip with fine optical markings that runs parallel to the carriage shaft.
At startup and at the end of each print job, the printer homes the carriage to the far-right service position, where the printhead nozzles are sealed (capped) to prevent drying. If the carriage cannot travel the full width of the printer or cannot reach the home cap station — due to obstruction, a belt or motor fault, or an encoder strip problem — the printer halts and displays support code 5100.
Support code 5100 is classified by Canon as a "carriage error." It differs from other Canon carriage-related errors as follows:
- 5100 — Carriage jam / carriage cannot reach home position
- 5200 — Printhead temperature error
- 6000 — Paper feed error
- B200 — Printhead hardware failure (voltage or temperature)
5100 is most commonly seen on Canon PIXMA MG2500, MG3600, MG5700, MX920, TR4500, TR8600, and TS3300 series printers.
What Causes This Error?
- Paper obstruction in the carriage path — the most common cause; a sheet, torn fragment, or folded piece of paper inside the print zone physically blocks the carriage from completing its travel
- Foreign object inside the printer — a paper clip, coin, staple, or piece of plastic packaging dropped into the paper tray can migrate to the carriage area during a feed cycle
- Ink cartridge not fully seated or the wrong cartridge installed — an improperly clicked cartridge sits slightly high and catches on the carriage cover as it tries to return to the home position
- Encoder strip dirty or damaged — ink mist accumulates on the encoder strip over time; a contaminated strip causes the carriage controller to misread position and halt with a 5100 error
- Carriage drive belt slipped or broken — the rubber belt that connects the carriage motor to the carriage has stretched, slipped off a pulley, or snapped, preventing controlled movement
- Dried ink or debris on the carriage shaft — ink and paper dust on the polished shaft increase friction as the carriage slides, eventually causing a stall under load
- Carriage motor failure — the motor has worn to the point where it can no longer move the carriage reliably, particularly noticeable during cold startup
How to Fix 5100
- 1
Turn the printer off and unplug it. Press the power button to turn the printer off, then disconnect the power cable from the printer. Do not skip unplugging — the carriage can snap back to the home position unexpectedly when power is applied.
- 2
Open the top cover and visually inspect the entire carriage path. With the cover open and the printer unplugged, look across the full width of the carriage track with a flashlight. Remove any paper sheets, torn fragments, or foreign objects from the carriage zone. Check behind the carriage as well as in front of it.
- 3
Gently slide the carriage by hand across the full width of the track. Push the carriage slowly from one end to the other and back. It should move smoothly and evenly. If you feel a resistance point, stop and look carefully at that exact position for an obstruction or a damaged belt pulley. Never force the carriage past resistance.
- 4
Check and reseat all ink cartridges. Press down firmly on each cartridge until it clicks. A cartridge sitting even slightly high will foul the carriage cover as the carriage tries to return home. Remove each cartridge one at a time and reseat with a firm press.
- 5
Inspect the encoder strip. The encoder strip is a thin transparent plastic strip running horizontally across the printer, slightly behind and above the carriage rod. Look for ink smears or visible dirt. Clean it by pinching it lightly between a dry lint-free cloth and drawing the cloth along its full length. Do not use liquids on the encoder strip.
- 6
Clean the carriage shaft. Apply a tiny amount of lightweight oil (sewing machine oil or a drop of 3-in-1 oil) to a lint-free cloth and run it along the full length of the carriage rod. Slide the carriage several times to distribute the oil. Wipe off any excess.
- 7
Reconnect power and turn the printer on. Allow the printer to complete its full startup sequence — the carriage will travel end-to-end and return to the home position. If it moves smoothly without halting, 5100 is resolved. Print a test page to confirm.
When to Call a Professional
If the carriage travels freely, all cartridges are correctly seated, and support code 5100 persists after a clean power cycle, the fault is most likely a failed carriage motor, a broken drive belt, or a failed encoder sensor on the carriage assembly. Carriage motor and belt replacement is a moderate DIY repair on most PIXMA models — replacement parts cost $15–40. For printers under Canon's 1-year limited warranty, contact Canon support at usa.canon.com/support or call 1-800-652-2666. Out-of-warranty, consider whether the repair cost is worthwhile compared to a replacement PIXMA model.
Can You Still Use the Device?
The printer is fully non-functional while support code 5100 is active. All pending print jobs remain queued and will process once the error is cleared — clear the queue before restarting to avoid unexpected output. Wireless and USB connectivity are unaffected.
